History

One of Dover’s main features is its historic castle which stands tall upon the White Cliffs protecting the waters of the English Channel and has been the site of many conflicts throughout the ages, and was used, along with its “Hellfire corner” tunnels during World War 2. These cliffs were brought to life with Vera Lynn's song “Blue Birds Over The White Cliffs Of Dover”, turning the cliffs, together with the defending castle, into a popular tourist attraction along with many other historical sites. Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare also included Dover in some of their work

The Port

Overlooked by the outstanding cliffs, is one of the busiest in the world, being the main gateway to and from the continent. Together with this, the new cruise liner terminal is attracting more outstanding ships now using Dover as their UK base, adding to the thriving tourist industry in the town.

Relaxing

Good places to relax within the town include parks such as Pencester Gardens (near the town centre), Connaught Park (a short walk from the town), and Kearsney Abbey (just outside of town), and of course no seaside town would be complete without a good beach. Pubs and cafe's abound and a local cinema always keeps up to date with the latest movies. 

Education

The Dover Discovery Centre plays a key role in education and leisure, providing services such as a library with free Internet access and historical events and displays (sometimes free to local residents), staged over the course of the year.

Shopping

Dover has a wide variety of shops, including clothing, electrical, and general stores, and also major supermarkets.

Transport

There is a reliable train service to places such as Deal, Canterbury and Folkestone, with a high-speed rail-link soon to be added, London is within easy reach, as is the continent with ferries which can whisk you to France very quickly to sample their lifestyle or shops. The local bus service is good and there are numerous taxi firms operating in the area. All in all Dover is a good place to make your home.
